Over the years, Friends of the Spit has evolved
into a sophisticated political force and built a
broad constituency of supporters. It is
considered as Toronto's premier grassroots
environmental group. Friends of the Spit has
1,200 members. Supporters, through membership in
allied groups, number in the thousands.

contributes extensively to further knowledge
about the Spit. They hold viewing days, give
talks, and keep the media informed. They
published checklists of birds and plants,
and an illustrated field guide to plants on
the Spit.

Friends of the Spit was instrumental in
opening the Spit to the public.

Friends of the Spit received the 1996
Award for Service to the Environment from
the Ontario Association of Landscape
Architects.

Friends of the Spit is the recipient of a
1998 Honour Roll Award by The Toronto and
Region Conservation Authority.

Friends of the Spit was presented with the
1998 W.E. Saunders Natural History Awards
from the Federation of Ontario Naturalists.

Thank You Green Toronto award from the City
of Toronto.

quiet recreation.
